SEVEN THINGS I LEARNED FROM WEEDS

8/4/2014

I'm taking a sabbatical from the life I used to know. I've traded cosmopolitan noise for quiet contemplation. One activity that is really feeding my soul is gardening. During a particularly thorough weeding session recently, I gained some insight into keeping your garden (or your mind) in balance.

  1. Weeds are neither good nor bad. They thrive on water, sunshine, air, earth, and other nutrients, just like the rest of us. They're simply trying to survive. However, it's okay to get rid of them if you feel like it.
  2. Weeds are sneaky. They can blend in with other plants. Sometimes you may mistake them for something you planted.
  3. Pulling out weeds makes you stronger. It builds muscle. The more you do it, the easier it is.
  4. Some weeds have thorns but they don't hurt as much as you might think. Sometimes what looks like a collection of thorns is actually just a coating of soft fur.
  5. You can often find a root system that connects many weeds together and if you're lucky, you can pull many out at once.
  6. They may grow back, but you can always get rid of them again.
  7. You don't have to get rid of all the weeds at once. Even if your garden has a lot of weeds, it can still thrive. Life finds a way.
